Sixth Mass Extinction! How close are we really?

Writer's picture: Tricia VernekarTricia Vernekar

The sixth mass extinction is a harsh reality we can't afford to ignore, fueled largely by human-induced climate change, the numbers paint a stark picture

SPECIES DISSAPEARING AT A RATE 1,000 TIMES FASTER THAN NATURAL BACKGROUND EXTINCTION RATE

1 MILLION SPECIES ARE CURRENTLY THREATENED WITH EXTINCTION

WILD MAMMALS HAVE DECLINED BY 85% SINCE THE RISE OF HUMANS

A study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) suggests that current extinction rates exceed those during the five previous mass extinction events in Earth's history.

Each species lost represents a thread pulled from the intricate tapestry of life, disrupting ecosystems and threatening the stability of our planet.

The consequences of this loss are far-reaching. From the collapse of food chains to the loss of essential ecosystem services, the impacts of biodiversity decline are felt by humans and wildlife alike.

But amidst the sobering statistics, there is room for action. By reducing greenhouse gas emissions, protecting and restoring habitats, and promoting sustainable practices, we can mitigate the effects of climate change and put a stop to this wave of catastrophe. The sixth mass extinction is not an inevitability; it's a wake-up call. It's time to face the facts and take decisive action to preserve the diversity of life on Earth for generations to come.
